Working class guardians likewise take more thought with specialists that are associated with their kids. Youngsters from purposeful development family units invest a lot of energy in after school classes or software engineers, for example, taking move exercises or being on a foo tball crew. Guardians in these families are engaged with their childrenââ¬â¢s spare time, shipping them from action to action, which, frequently, a few mothers are called ââ¬Å"soccer momsâ⬠for the youngsters who play soccer.Concerted development guardians additionally accentuate arrangement, urging their kids to address authority figures, including themselves. Subsequently, youngsters from purposeful development homes will in general be less scared by power, for example, educators, and achieve a feeling of ââ¬Å"powerâ⬠, accepting they are ââ¬Å"worthy of grown-up interestâ⬠and can ââ¬Å"customizeâ⬠their condition. With purposeful development, Lareau gives the case of white collar class ââ¬ËAlexââ¬â¢, who is taken to the doctorââ¬â¢s by his mom. In the vehicle, she discloses to her child that he ought not be timid and ask the specialist anything he wants.Alex connects in a casual manner with the specialist, asking him inquiries and in any event, intruding on him when he gets his age wrong and uses a word Alex doesn't have the foggiest idea. The Doctor takes note of that he is in the 95th percentile in stature, Alex intrudes on him. ââ¬Å"Alex: Iââ¬â¢m in what? Specialist: It implies that youââ¬â¢re taller than more than ninety-five out of a hundred youngsters when theyââ¬â¢re, uh, ten years of age. Alex: Iââ¬â¢m not ten Doctor: well they diagramed you at ten. Youââ¬â¢re-nine years and ten months. They-they for the most part take the nearest year to get that graphâ⬠.The demonstration of interfering with an individual of power is a presentation of qualification. It is additionally demonstrative of working class kid raising needs; the incivility of interfering with a speaker is ignored for empowering childrenââ¬â¢s feeling of their individual significance and of insisting their entitlement to air their own considerations and thoughts to grown-u ps. (lareau, 2011, p. 124-125) Children from more unfortunate class, characteristic development, homes typically invest the vast majority of their energy playing outside with kin and other youngsters from their area.Parents invest brief period at home since they are working, sitting tight for open transportation or holding up in line at social assistance organizations. They don't ââ¬Å"scheduleâ⬠their childrenââ¬â¢s time or care much about developing, or advancing, their childrenââ¬â¢s gifts and interests. Child rearing is generally severe and kids are following orders without exchange. Around power figures, for example, instructors, regular workers kids and their folks will in general be peaceful and idle, taking a gander at the ground and not posing inquiries.

Check Out Bright Hill Press and Literary Center
Check Out Bright Hill Press and Literary Center Take a road trip up into the hills of central New York State, and youâll find literature in those hills. Nestled in Treadwell, NY, Bright Hill Press and Literary Center offers a bevy of creative and fun events for book lovers of all ages. An impressive 12,000 volume library stands as an extension to an 1865 house. The house and library serve as literary central: readings, workshops, the Word Image Gallery for visual exhibits. Because itâs a house, it has a kitchen (wine and cheese, yâall!, plus fresh local produce!) and a bedroom for visiting writers and artists (I stayed overnight and it was lovely, and they gave me breakfast!). Thereâs also a garden outside, which is fantastic for inspiration. Bertha Rogers Before Bright Hill Press, there was Word Thursdays. In 1989, Bertha Rogers moved with her husband from New York City to the Catskills. Because she missed regular readings, she sent a press release to The Daily Star, the local paper, calling writers for a reading on a Thursday that January. Five people came. Then every 2nd and 4th Thursday, people kept coming. After a few months, Bertha invited New York City writers to feature alongside writers from the upstate area. The reading series is still going strong today. Officially, Bright Hill Press was founded in 1992 with Bertha Rogers and Ernest M. Fishman. Its mission âis to seek out, study, and collect the work of early and contemporary writers, storytellers, and artists, and to publish, disseminate, and present that work through publications and educational and public programs for the larger community.â Authors who inspired the creation of Bright Hill Press are varied and numerous. Some well-known poets are Elizabeth Bishop and Robert Lowell. Bertha says, âthe most significant local gemâ was a writer who taught at SUNY Oneonta and began attending readings: Graham Duncan. He was a long-time supporter of their events. The press offers a full-length poetry book competition every year, and they also publish their own works. Recent Bright Hill Books include The Threshold of Light by Michael S. Glaser, Final Fort by Caroline Morrell, and their 25th Anniversary arts exhibit collection, Book Arts 2017, which shows off their word and image gallery with commentary by Alexander Campos and Bertha Rogers. In addition to Word Thursdays and small press publications, they partner with the New York State Council on the Arts to develop the New York State LitMap. This map shows writers across all of New York State and is chock full of interesting tidbits about each one. You may want to get two hard copies to hang on your walls, one showing off the map and one showing off the lush literary history on the back. Additional programs include Summer Literary Workshops for adults, teens, and children; Radio By Writers; Share the Words High School Poetry Competition; The Great Cultural Spelling Bee, co-sponsored by Roxbury Arts Group; and The Big Read, co-sponsored with Foothills Performing Arts in Oneonta, NY. A particularly memorable event for the literary center unfolded in 1996 during a 3-day Iroquois Festival involving hundreds of Native Americans from all over the country. The local private college Hartwick hosted an exhibit of Iroquois arts. Also, Chief Jake Swamp of the Mohawk tribe planted two white pine trees of peace at Bright Hill Farm (the original site before moving to the current house) and on Hartwickâs campus. There were panel discussions, readings, and music throughout the festival. Bertha Rogers retired after 25 years in 2017 though she still edits the poetry books they publish and still teaches the workshops for kids. Beatrice Georgalidis is now Executive Director and artistic director. Currently, Bertha is reading Lies of Silence by Brian Moore. She recommends picking up Susan Orleonâs The Library Book. Beatrice Georgalidis Beatrice, when sheâs not busy with the incredible task of directing Bright Hill, is reading The Source of Self Regard by Toni Morrison. She recommends Donna Tarttâs The Secret History. They both recommend Graham Greeneâs The End of the Affair and The Comedians. When you do head out to Bright Hill Press for one of their amazing endeavors, bring a hard copy road map just in case you get lost. Your GPS may go out (and then you may or may not wind up drive-crying on the side of a mountain for a whileâ"not that this exact thing happened to me or anything). Still, worth every second. Current exhibit: Hardened Shapes by artist Leah Frankel and poet Irish Cushing Coming up: Hat Key by artist Walter Hatke and poet Jordan Smith Word Thursdays: Thursday, April 25 2019: Rainie Oet and Mike Jurkovic.

Who Was the Ruler Known as King Porus of Paurava
King Porus of Paurava was an important ruler in the Indian subcontinent during the 4th century BCE. Porus fiercely battled Alexander the Great, and not only survived that battle, but made an honorable peace with him and gained an even larger rule in Punjab in what is today Pakistan. Curiously, his story is written in numerous Greek sources (Plutarch, Arrian, Diodorus, and Ptolemy, among others) but barely mentioned in Indian sources, a fact which leads some historians to wonder about the peaceful ending. Who Was Porus? Porus, also spelled Poros and Puru in Sanskrit, was one of the last members of the dynasty of Puru, a clan known both in India and Iran and said to have originated from Central Asia. The clan families were members of the Parvatiya (mountaineers) mentioned by Greek writers. Porus ruled over the land between the Hydaspes (Jhelum) and the Acesines rivers in the Punjab region and he first appears in Greek sources in connection with Alexander. The Persian Achaemenid ruler Darius III asked Poros for help defending himself against Alexander after his third disastrous loss at Gaugamela and Arbela in 330 BCE. Instead, Dariuss men, sick of losing so many battles, killed him and joined Alexanders forces. Battle of the Hydaspes River Detail of Mosaic Alexander the Great at the Battle of Issus, Pompeii. Getty Images / Leemage/Corbis In June 326 BCE, Alexander decided to leave Bactria and cross the Jhelum River into Poruss realm. Several of Poruss rivals joined Alexander in his imperial move into the continent; but Alexander was held up at riversedge because it was the rainy season and the river was swollen and turbulent. It didnt stop him for long. Word reached Porus that Alexander had found a place to cross; he sent his son to investigate, but the son and his 2,000 men and 120 chariots were destroyed. Porus went to meet Alexander himself, bringing 50,000 men, 3,000 calvaries, 1,000 chariots, and 130 war elephants against Alexanders 31,000 (but the numbers vary widely from source to source). Monsoons proved more of an obstacle to the Indian bowmen (who could not use the muddy ground to gain purchase for their longbows) than to the Macedonians who crossed the swollen Hydaspes on pontoons. Alexanders troops gained the upper hand; even the Indian elephants were said to have stampeded their own troops. Aftermath Chandraguptas footprints. Romana Klee/Flickr According to the Greek reports, the wounded but unbowed King Porus surrendered to Alexander, who made him a satrap (basically a Greek regent) with control over his own kingdom. Alexander continued to advance into India, gaining regions controlled by 15 of Poruss rivals and 5,000 sizable cities and villages. He also founded two cities of Greek soldiers: Nikaia and Boukephala, the last named after his horse Bucephalus, who had died in the battle. Poruss troops helped Alexander crush the Kathaioi, and Porus was given control over much of the area to the east of his old kingdom. Alexanders advance stopped at the kingdom of Magadha, and he left the subcontinent, leaving Porus as the head of the satrapy in Punjab as far east as the Beas and Sutlej rivers. It didnt last long. Porus and his rival Chandragupta led a revolt against the remnants of Greek rule, and Porus himself was assassinated between 321 and 315 BCE. Chandragupta would go on to establish the Great Mauryan Empire. Ancient Writers Ancient writers about Porus and Alexander the Great at the Hydaspes, who were, unfortunately, not contemporaries of Alexander, are: Arrian (probably best, based on the eyewitness account of Ptolemy), Plutarch, Q. Curtius Rufus, Diodorus, and Marcus Junianus Justinus (Epitome of the Philippic History of Pompeius Trogus). Indian scholars such as Buddha Prakash have wondered if the story of Poruss loss and surrender might have been a more equal decision than the Greek sources would have us beliieve. During the battle against Porus, Alexanders men encountered poison on the tusks of the elephants. Military History of Ancient India says the tusks were tipped with poison-coated swords, and Adrienne Mayor identifies the poison as Russells viper venom, as she writes in The Uses of Snake Venom in Antiquity. Porus himself was said to have been killed by physical contact with a poisoned girl. Sources De Beauvoir Priaulx, Osmond. On the Indian Embassy to Augustus. Human And Non Human Animals - 1791 Words
With several scientifically verifiable differences between human and non-human animals, there are major similarities in terms of biological make ups, livelihood requirements, and life cycles. Major differences are cited on the grounds of brain functionality and response to various environmental stimuli. Basing the whole argument on the differences in the mental capabilities of both human and non-human animals, the latter is viewed as less being that is vulnerable and that requires support, protection and general care. In regard to this, therefore, there have been major discriminations against the non-human animals whereby human has exploited other non-human animals in their day to day life. All the acts of unjustified differentials in moral considerations mainly trace their roots on the observed differences in mental capacities between these species. This paper presents how morality can sustain an opposition between human and non-human animals. The position of the animalsââ¬â¢ wel fare that presents the prevailing viewpoint for looking into humanââ¬â¢s moral as well as legal mandate to the non-human animals, holds to the fact that the life of animals is less valued compared to humanââ¬â¢s life. Therefore, animals can be used as humanââ¬â¢s resources and wealth as long as they are treated ââ¬Ëhumanelyââ¬â¢ without inflicting unnecessary pain and suffering. People can be exposed to misunderstandings in the workplace due to conflict of interests. These conflicts of interests can be rooted from a variety of cultural differences among distinctive ethnic backgrounds other than our own, and international individuals who are in our country solely for education or temporary work. We will write a custom essay sample on Communication Issues in the Workplace or any similar topic only for you Order Now Lack of proper understanding or skills of diversity in the workplace can cause many discrepancies among coworkers. People live in an increasingly complex world. One element of this complexity is the mixing of different cultures, languages and faiths. Within the business world intercultural communication is vital for success. Effective communication between colleagues from different cultural backgrounds ensures a team is working harmoniously. (The Six Steps to Intercultural Communication, à ¶ 1) Situation There was a Caucasian tall skinny man with glasses who worked as a Deejay in West Virginia while attending West Virginia University. He was part German with somewhat of an accent. He had previous experience with all genres of music. His plan was to finish school and return to Germany to pursue his dream of being an internationally known Deejay. He was invited to a national hip hop celebration to perform as an artist and as a Deejay. The coordinator informed the African American Deejayââ¬â¢s that there would be a Caucasian Deejay coming to assist with them at the job. When he arrived to the celebration, there was a huge table of all African American Deejayââ¬â¢s setting up their equipment. He was told by the coordinator to set up as soon as he arrived there. So he walked up to the table of Deejayââ¬â¢s and they started laughing at him. They made fun of him and ridiculed him thinking it was a joke that he came to Deejay. They made fun of his appearance and did not take him serious. He went to the coordinator and told the coordinator the situation. The coordinator came over to the table of Deejayââ¬â¢s and explained that he was one of the Deejayââ¬â¢s to be performing and to clear a space for his equipment as they would not do before. Without hesitation they apologized and cleared a space for the German Deejay to set up his equipment. Diagnosis Conflict is a clash of values that is a common occurrence in the workplace. (Teo, 2006, December 13, à ¶ 1) In this particular situation the Deejayââ¬â¢s at the national celebration being all African American may have misjudged the German Deejay for his appearance and accent. They may have underestimated his ability to Deejay effectively based off of his appearance of different culture and his accent. Because this was a hip hop celebration they seemed to have assumed that he was incapable of livening up the crowd. This common situation of conflict needs to be addressed more in any workplace. More often executives are expected to work internationally, hence business and social contacts between people of various nationalities increased. As these people come from disparate cultural backgrounds, geographical barriers gave way to communication barriers that lead to tensions and conflicts. Teo, à ¶ 2) The important for leaders of any organization properly to train its employees of cultural differences and how to handle situations that may arise is increasingly important. The coordinator may have not properly informed the German Deejay of what he would be exposed to during this particular job. As a result it was somewhat of a culture shock for the German Deejay . This was a culture shock for the German Deejay especially not knowing what to think or expect. If the coordinator would have notified the African American Deejayââ¬â¢s of the complete extent of the German/Caucasian manââ¬â¢s nationality or description it would have made it easier for everyone involved at the job. The African American Deejayââ¬â¢s were use to working with other African American Deejayââ¬â¢s experienced in hip hop only. The German Deejay felt like an outcast when the African American Deejayââ¬â¢s made fun of him and nonverbally displayed he was unwelcomed by not clearing a space for his equipment due to their poor lack of judgment. Solutions Any person being of a different ethnicity in a completely different country can expect to experience a conflict of interest at any workplace unfortunately. A decision to be made upon the leaders of the organization to enhance its entire employeeââ¬â¢s of the importance of diversity skills and how it can lead to success. If the coordinator would have informed the African American Deejayââ¬â¢s of the nationality, talent, skills, and capabilities of the German Deejay then perhaps the African American Deejayââ¬â¢s would have been more welcoming to the German Deejay. The German Deejay could have gone to the human resources department of the organization and he or she could offer help for this situation. Any coordinator of any national event should always inform its employees of any possibility of conflicts of interests or lack of understanding of misjudgments that may occur and how to handle a situation like that. In order to come to appreciate and understand people from different cultures, empathy is vital. Through putting yourself in someone elseââ¬â¢s shoes he or she will come to see or appreciate their point of view. The Six Steps to Intercultural Communication, à ¶ 5) Everyone makes or has assumptions about others. Assumptions are beliefs rather than objective truth and are usually influenced by a number of subjective factors. (The Six Steps to Intercultural Communication, à ¶ 3) Any employee of any workplace must take interest to understand the differences between cultural norms, beliefs, and values within each culture and that they ar e all distinctive. People should always respect other cultures in order to create a civil and fair work environment. Conclusion Diversity skills are very important to have in any work environment. Without efficient knowledge or understanding of other cultures and the capabilities of behavior from one culture to the next, conflicts of interest may arise. If employees and leaders can work together to access and prevent any bad situation from happening it would be beneficial to the organization as well as the employeeââ¬â¢s. Regardless of the ethnic background of a person, monitoring our own behavior can always be a way of building opportunities and the ability to enhance strengths of comprehending the importance of eing equipped with proper knowledge on the expansion of diversity among workerââ¬â¢s anywhere.
